Queen Honored With two Ivor
Novello Awards
The band collected two awards at the Ivor Novello Awards held on 26th,
May at Grosvenor House in London. The first award was for "Outstanding
Song Collection" which they collected from Guy Chambers. The
2nd award was for "Bohemian Rhapsody", which was voted Song
of the Decade 1975-1984 by the public through the UK's most listened
to radio station, BBC Radio 2. Both Roger and Brian were present and
made short speeches. Some pictures from the web can be viewed here.
Roger said about The Ivors "This is all
about music, it's about songwriting, and it's not a TV show...also,
the award is the nicest looking award on the mantelpiece. But it's
about music and writing so it means an awful lot to get one."

Sorry, no pictures from the
UK shows yet (still waiting for them). I did attend the Wembley gig
but those who read the reviews of the show already know about this
crap "venue" (if not please read Brian's comment
in his soapbox!) and the problems all people had that had seats behind
the mixing desk. Roger's comment during the concert about this tent
was: "I dunno who designed this but it
brings a whole new meaning to the word camping" - which
says it all I guess (oh, another funny comment before he started the
drum solo was definately: "If you're expecting
Ginger Baker you can fucking go home now, cause this is going to be
short and relatively painless.").
So instead I uploaded a few images from Antwerp
sent in by Fabrice and one more of John and Roger in the category
"Close Encounters" (Thank
you, guys!). Enjoy! |

"Under pressure"
played in Manchester
Under Pressure was played as the first song in encore (in the place
where "The Show Must Go On" is usually played). Vocals were
shared between Roger and Brian, with Roger doing most of the singing,
whilst playing the drums.
Ed: Roger seems to be a real standout performer on this tour with
his dual singing and drumming duties! (source)
Here's a link
to a (4 out of 5 stars) review about the Manchester gig and Peter
Kay's surprise guest appearance. |

Classic Rock magazine - Greatest
Drummers in Rock
No.37 Roger Taylor Band: Queen Defining Moment: Radio Ga Ga
"There was a wealth of talent in Queen: And then there's Roger
Taylor. Not only A great drummer - he's a man who manages to combine
a pop and even funk approach with moments of ferocity (Sevens Seas
Of Rhye and Hammer To Fall) - he's a songwriter and singer too: The
man who wrote Radio Ga Ga and supplied Queen with many of those fantastic
vocal harmonies. And he has celebrity fans...". Matt Sourum (ex
- Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver): "Roger
Taylor inspired me in so many ways. He was actually the first rock
start I saw in real life. I was 15. It was at the Bar and Grill in
Hollywood and he pulled up in a Rolls Royce, wearing this great suit,
with a girl on each arm. He had such a sense of style, and I have
always tried to emulate that. I played with him once at the Freddie
Mercury concert at Wembley and he was dressed totally in white denim.
I told him, 'You can sing like a motherfucker!'..."
There then follows a short interview
with Taylor where he talks about playing from the heart, his 'big,
fat ambient, monster drum sound', his inspiration from John Bonham,
Keith Moon and Mitch Mitchell, plus his current favourites in Abe
Laboriel Jnr (McCartney) and Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins from the
Foo Fighters. (source
