Roger Taylor News Two

June 16, 2015

We Will Rock You again: Queen back in the studio – LONDON (AFP) – Legendary British rock band Queen are back in full studio recording sessions for the first time since their iconic frontman Freddie Mercury died in 1991, the group’s guitarist Brian May said. The 59-year-old told AFP that he and Queen drummer Roger Taylor had joined forces with former Free vocalist Paul Rodgers and had already worked up a handful of new tracks. The trio toured Europe and Japan in 2005 and North America earlier this year in what was the first Queen tour since 1986. Former astronomy student May has been busy with his new book about space entitled “Bang! The Complete History of the Universe”, but insisted he had not swapped the plectrum for the pen permanently.

“The music is not on hold,” the guitar legend said. “We have about three weeks booked in the studio at the moment. It was going to be just exploratory to see what happened when Paul and Roger and I were in the same room with a recording machine. But we’re already deep into it and we already have some very good material so I’m pretty excited about that: it’s very new, very different,” he promised. “There may be enough there to create an album, though it’s early days yet. At the moment it’s just a few tracks but we’ll see how it goes. It’s pretty exciting.” And despite the lack of a new Queen album since “Made in Heaven” in 1995 — painstakingly created with scraps of vocals left by Mercury — May insisted the pressure was off and the focus was on fun.

“It’s great to do it for its own sake, it doesn’t have to be an album, it doesn’t have to be anything; it doesn’t have to make money either. We don’t really have anything to prove but we have a lot of passion still in our bodies and it seems to be finding a good place at the moment.” May and Taylor have occasionally been in the studio together since Mercury died — bassist John Deacon retired in the late 1990s — but this is the first time they have had a lengthy recording session working on new material. And May said the Queen plus Paul Rodgers show could hit the stage again. “It’s on the cards: we might do some more touring depending on how we feel,” he said. May wrote on his website that the trio were back in the studio Wednesday to work on more new tracks. He said the songs were “epic” and a diversion from anything Queen or Rodgers had done before. “The gates for the 46664 concert at Fancourt at George in the Southern Cape are expected to open in just over an hour. People are already queuing. Nelson Mandela, the former president, and international and local performers will arrive at the venue in a police-led convoy. The line-up includes, Will Smith, India Arie, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, Mafikizolo and many more. The concert is expected to raise R10 million for the fight against Aids. The show will kick-off with local unknown performers. Mandela is expected to address the crowd of 20 000 people. Big business and VIPS’s, who have bought tents in the open air arena, are already streaming in to take their seats. Local media have dubbed the spectacular as the event of the year.” (source)

It has been 33 °C here in George today and the stage is now taking shape. The side of stage scrims have now been added revealing the smiling image of Mandela on the left and a diagonal 46664 logo on the other. The artists have now arrived and are preparing for their final warm ups. It is 7pm here in South Africa and Annie Lennox has just finished her final practise. She and her ever so tight band ripped through handful of Annie’s solo hits with superb results…a highlight of Saturday night surely. Tomorrow morning sees Queen + Paul Rodgers step up to the stage for their final rehearsal. India.Arie, Katie Melua and Will Smith run through later in the day. Look out for images and footage right here. (source)

Queen and Paul Rodgers have decided to offer thousands of free tickets for their rescheduled HYDE PARK show to members of LONDON’s emergency services. Surviving members of the classic rockers, who are currently on tour with former Free singer Paul Rodgers on vocals, decided to make the personal gesture to police, paramedics and firefighters following their heroic response to the recent bomb attacks in the city.

A statement on the official website reads: “We feel it is fitting to thank London’s emergency services for their extraordinary response in dealing with the effects of the bombing attacks and and to indeed celebrate the historical resilience of Londoners in their response to yet another atrocity.”

Queen and Paul Rodgers are working with London Mayor Ken Livingstone’s office to invite thousands of those from London’s emergency services who played a part in the rescue operations last week to be at the band’s concert this coming Friday evening. The group, who were due to play the gig last Friday (July 8), took the decision after seeing the news coverage of the attacks unfold on the television.

”We were away playing a concert in Germany and arrived back Thursday morning to see all this going on. We were unbelievably shocked and saddened. The heroes that day, and since then, are the police and emergency services coming together as one, calmly and bravely dealing with the tragedy and getting London’s wheels turning again. We’d like to offer an appreciation,” said guitarist Brian May.

Drummer Roger Taylor added: “You can only admire how calmly, how bravely they behaved in such appalling circumstances. They deserve the thanks of everyone in London.” Ticket collection points are currently being set up at London’s Dominion Theatre and Capital Radio’s Leicester Square headquarters for this Friday’s concert.

QUEEN drummer ROGER TAYLOR has praised ROBBIE WILLIAMS for giving the best performance of the day at the London leg of Live 8 earlier this month (JUL 5th). Taylor also gave Williams the ultimate compliment, saying his showmanship would even have impressed late Queen frontman FREDDIE MERCURY. Taylor says, “Robbie was great. Robbie was one of the few who involved the crowd and I felt there wasn’t quite enough of that, but the concert itself was a great achievement.” (source)

Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and Albums
According to the compilers of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and Albums, Queen have spent 1,322 weeks on the chart, compared with the Beatles’ 1,293 weeks. Roger Taylor, the group’s drummer, said yesterday (Ed: sorry, older news from July 5th) he was staggered by the news. Speaking from Lisbon, the latest leg of Queen’s European stadium tour, he said: “We were always incredibly ambitious. But we never expected to see a list that read Queen, then the Beatles, then Elvis.”
